First announced in the early 90's as Le Vide ("The Void") and then renamed as Soudain le vide (literally "Sudden the void") until its released in 2009 (renamed by its international title Enter the Void), it's probably one of the oldest feature projects Gaspar Noé ever had. It took him about twenty years to develop it, and he had to wait for making himself a name (with Irreversible) to expect a substantial budget given the visual effects needed. Therefore an ambitious movie, it's his most expensive movie (10 millions euros), and without making as much noise as Irreversible, it still had quite an impact : the band A$AP Rocky clearly references the movie in their music video "LSD" while Kanye West was accused of plagiarism with "All of the Lights" music video, which remakes Enter the Void's opening credits.
However, the movie doesn't avoid some improvisation and cameos from its director. For instance, not any actor is known until october, 16th, 2007, that is to say three days before the beginning of the shooting. Cyril Roy, who performs Alex, came to the casting as a fan to escort a friend but he was chosen instead. About the cameos, we can see at the beginning a Japanese poster of Irreversible at Oscar's and Gaspar Noé replaces Cyril Roy during a subliminal frame when Oscar's spirit has a nightmare.
We can note too that it was sound designed by Thomas Bangalter, a Daft Punk (who were supposed to conduct the music but he declined because of his busy schedule) while the set was designed by Marc Caro !
