Frankie Pain (Partie 2) | Interview | Le Temps Détruit Tout
top of page

On a découvert La Dimension d’Amour !

« Dis donc, tu n’as pas changé ! »

Silence, hôpital !
Silence, on tourne…

Je suis allé me coucher directement. Enfin je me comprends...

Frankie Pain played the butcher's wife (Philippe Nahon) in Carne and Seul contre tous. She had already granted an interview to Philippe Lowinski for the site in 2004. A few months ago, she found Gaspar Noé's favorite actor in the short film "Situation Critique" byBoris Vassallo and Guillaume Mezzo with Jean-Claude Dreyfus in the main role.

10 years after Gaspar Noé's masterpiece, a direct and poetic return to the career of an extraordinary temperament.

Interview by Philippe Lowinski

More than ten years have passed since I Stand Alone, and seventeen since Carne; with hindsight, what do you retain from these cinematographic experiences?

They marked the whole world!

I did some tests with the Coen brothers for Paris, je t'aime, and was selected when there were two of us in the “final”. When I entered the Hilton hotel and found myself facing Joël and Ethan, they were delighted to meet me; not for the tests I had done, and which had gone to the United States, but because they had seen Gaspar Noé's film. Of course, I think they had also seen Amélie Poulain… but the shock in their eyes was due to I Stand Alone and Carne. And besides, they are the only directors who have chosen me to play the role of a Lacanian psychoanalyst, to represent the French language and the Louvre.

So, thanks to this worldwide recognition of Gaspar's films, I sometimes found myself in markets, very far away, where people, young people, told me about the film. One day, while I was buying Sallers steak with my boyfriend, two Japanese came to interview me and took a picture of me; they were overjoyed, and my friend didn't know that in my spare time I could be a famous woman!

Regularly, young people tell me about Gaspar's film and their interest in it.

And it is a phenomenon that crosses the generations ...

So, obviously, my body has changed, I rounded up a bit, but the film is still present in the collective unconscious; it is really a great reference! I Stand Alone has been passed down from generations of young cinephiles, to generations of young cinephiles. In my opinion, the first to be affected are in the 22/30 age group; and that has not changed! Sometimes in the metro, some people turn on me and blush with joy! They say to me: “What a joy to meet you Frankie Pain! You don't have time for a coffee? ".

In the space of a short (Carne) and a feature film (SCT), Gaspar Noé has iconized you. What has this changed in your career? What are the advantages and disadvantages of such a place and such a powerful image?

I could only speak of advantages today! If there were any gray areas, at one point I think it was due to our differing views on incest, that some men identified with the butcher's rant in Carne; that made a number of things say, but it is no longer important to come back to them.

The violence was immeasurable there, and I might know that it was only a film, I would disappear as quickly as possible, and it would appear anywhere ... Bleeding happenings, where archaic impulses escaped like highs the heart, vomiting.

A man confided to me that he had conquered his helplessness in the face of women, after having played the film a hundred times! After that, he sent me white flowers for a year, and never asked me for anything in return.

People were very marked by what happened in Cannes when Irréversible was released in May 2002. First, I had a narrow escape turn thanks to the power of my voice: j 'I pushed the "kiaï", the cry of the samurai and the beautiful little teams and their bird to fly into the forbidden place, they took flight! A miracle !

There was a search for identification with the character of Monica Bellucci and me "first role" in I Stand Alone; I was hunted down by these people.

It was really the combined result of the hysterical reactions of the Press, of this film, of the rape, and of my interpretation in the first feature film by Gaspar Noé. It was a very dangerous time for me! I suffered a lot from it. Especially since at that time, I had no particular link with Gaspar… He did not show up… Along with all this, there are people who, still at the time of Cannes, told me: "Alone against everyone will be THE unforgettable film!" "

A lot of moviegoers have given me this feedback on Irréversible. This film, I did not have the courage to see it, in view of the aggression to which I had been the object. I could not. And then I was very scared, because I know the world of Gaspar. I followed everything: the interviews, the press, etc ... So I expected very strong images. Regarding the press, we were in intellectual terrorism! I think that one day I will rent it with some friends; I will do this baptism for myself.

To come back to the advantages and disadvantages of such a marked role, I am going to tell you a little anecdote lived with Christophe Gans for Le Pacte des loups. When he saw me in makeup, he thought I was disabled, even debilitated! So he asked the make-up artist to apply more “powerful” make-up! I then understood that he had chosen me on a film, and not on who I was. I went to see him, we ate together, and at one point, I said to him: "Listen Christophe, I don't know what's going on, but I have the impression that you chose me on the film. of Gaspar, and not according to who I am ”. He said to me, “That's right”. To that I replied: "In this case, we will start from the character of SCT, since I know him very well and know the work I have done on myself to bring him to life. It is also in this sense that I understood my role in Le Pacte des loups. For me, the madam of the Pacte is a bit like the Irma of Jeunet ”. It was exactly the model he had in mind !!

In short, SCT has always brought me roles of strong women ... And then there were enough images in the world of cinema, so that I was offered colors closer to my real personality, for example my role in Amélie Poulain; but always with a certain petulance, a cheeky side, you know what I mean! But still quite tender. A good woman, what!

On the occasion of the shooting of a short film, "Situation Critique" by Boris Vassallo, the mythical couple of French cinema, Frankie Pain / Philippe Nahon, has reformed. How did you experience this reunion?

At first I did not know! Boris and Guillaume (the directors) didn't know either, they had never seen SCT. Me, when I saw Philippe Nahon, I jumped for joy… and him too! Something that surprised me enormously, because during the filming of SCT, our relations were not so warm. He had very tender and sweet relations with his daughter (played by Blandine Lenoir), but between us, it was only a simple artistic collaboration; we were not in the bestowal. But there, our joy exploded. What surprised Boris and Guillaume a lot! Philippe took me in his arms, we kissed, and I started laughing so much I found the situation funny. He was rediscovering my banter, and I didn't know he liked me so much, because he had never shown it. During the shooting, he had an extremely good look at me, which was very pleasant, because he had never had it… at least, I had not noticed it at all. I think when we were shooting SCT, we were in our roles two hundred percent. Our reports were colored with the psychology of our characters… all of this was consistent. Working again with Philippe was very good, because the reports we had had nothing to do with those previously mentioned. This time, it was about happy relationships, love, complicity, and if this woman still had a little ascendancy over her husband, it was manifested in an emotional and very compassionate way (he was in the 31st page, that was sad!); that's why she decides to get involved, by becoming the bait of crime, thus, her man will have the first page in the newspapers. For Philippe and me, this relationship was brand new! Playing against the grain in the violence of our relationships must not have been easy for either of them, because we had never done it before. We had never spoken ... For me, it was blessed bread to be in this bond with Philippe. I discovered colors that he carried within him, but that I had never caught. At that point, I realized how much I had been alone on the bench while filming SCT, aside from the work we had done with Gaspar. I experienced great pain and immense loneliness on this occasion. There is in this short film a very important reconciling dimension: that of the characters (the butcher and the owner of the bistro) and that of the actors (Philippe and me). We discovered The Dimension of Love!

Was there any apprehension on your part?

No, because we didn't know we were going to play together. We only learned about it on D-day. At the beginning, Boris and Guillaume had found me another husband, and when they saw me, they said to themselves that it was definitely not going to do it! Because the relationship between personalities was unbalanced, and not strong enough. For this woman, he needed a "choice piece", weight in front of her, and it was not ...

They had also thought of another actor (whose name I will not mention) with whom I had already had seven days of filming: a horror! He had never said hello to me, insulting him so far as not to give me the look when we were playing in front of the camera. It seemed risky to put us face to face in a short film. It turns out that this man said no because he was in a depression; so it did not happen.

To talk about something else, I think the one who married us (Philippe and me) for this short, is the same who united us for SCT: Claude Wolf from the electronic file. When Boris and Guillaume spoke to him about Frankie Pain, he immediately thought of Philippe Nahon, without mentioning our common cinematographic past. When the boys saw Philippe, they immediately realized that it could and would work! Unfortunately, since then, Claude Wolf is dead… he was a great Casting Director who served a lot of first films, short films, and who knew perfectly all the people who were at home. And when he offered roles, he only offered four or five, no more. They were choices that stuck every time. Claude Wolf is the great Angel who worked for the Frankie Pain / Philippe Nahon reconciliation. I am pleased to talk about it with you in this interview, because the last time I saw it was during the public presentation of Situation Critique.

Coming back to Philippe and I, we ended up on The Wolf Pact, and I think we're a couple that works on feature films. And I think it's a shame that the directors don't think about it enough, because we can do important things together. This is another story…

With a little luck, in yet another remake of "Night of the Living Dead"; I am cynical and it does not look like me! End clap, Señor!

How do you resume a "cinematographic conjugal" situation after ten years of separation?

The simplest in the world ! I worked on my character as I do for each role. I saw that I found Monsieur Dreyfus, and for me, it was again a dive into the world of Caro and Jeunet with The City of Lost Children, where I played the wife of the flea tamer. And when I saw Nahon, it was like an apotheosis, because I found myself in a story at the confluence of two worlds: that of Jeunet and Caro, and that of Gaspar Noé. It made me laugh a lot!

If you had known that you were going to tour with Philippe Nahon, would that have served you? Would you have worked the character differently?

I would have done the same thing regarding the search for my character; but given the great silence that had established between him and me after leaving SCT, I would have created an antidote for the love relationship to go well. In other words, I would have apprehended ...

During the filming of "Situation Critique", did you have SCT in mind, or did you manage to temporarily banish it from your mind, in order to avoid copy and paste?

When I took the carrots, it was hard for me not to think about the ones I had asked for for Carne, in the pot au feu and sodomy scene! But this time, I had love in me for my boy, we were no longer in a relationship of strength and hatred.

Did you know that Boris Vassallo had never seen Carne and SCT? It is very disturbing when we discover certain “Critical Situation” shots!

I had no idea that he had never seen Carne or SCT, and that despite everything, some of his plans were reminiscent of Gaspar's. I was mostly obsessed with the reference to Delicatessen. I think Gaspar influenced a number of young directors, because they are sponges, like all artists.

In what I write, I am still very marked by my references, very imprint, I would even say, of Roland Barthes, Marguerite Yourcenar and others, without reaching their ankles, and this is true for all my readings.

Henri Gougaud, this great storyteller, in the effective forms of the story, the time allotted to each story, the metaphors ... And The language of Olivier Apert (author, poet librettist) with whom I had the pleasure of working every week in student applied for the year 2008-2009!

It is also a way to learn the trade! It is true that afterwards, you have to manage to detach yourself to find your own signature, but it is a normal and almost obligatory passage; but I don't worry about Guillaume and Boris. Without them knowing it, without their knowing it, Gaspar must have influenced them, since I did not make the connection, whereas for you it was obvious! Which means that his breath swelled the sails of their short film, although they had never seen SCT.

I'm going to show you some photos from the SCT shoot that appear on the Gaspar Noé, LTDT site. What do you want to tell us when you see them?

That time has passed, that Gaspar was then a very small young man [comment from Philippe Lowinski: he was very handsome with his hair the guy!], That I too have changed. I was very beautiful and I did not realize it. I am moved to see Martine again, the one who played the role of my mother. There are technicians that I have found on feature films; it seems very distant, as part of another life ...

Have you seen Gaspar Noé again, and if so, under what circumstances? What emotion did you feel?

Well, I was leaving a store where I had just bought myself a stick of lipstick, near Strasbourg-St-Denis, for the shooting of Jean-François Richet's film The enemy number one, dedicated in Mesrine. And who do I run into when I leave the store? On Gaspar! I had not met him since SCT, when we defended the film in 1998 in Namur. I was blushing! I put on this lipstick since I was going to play the role of a successful old whore who owns a good bistro in the 15th arrondissement. Coming out of there, I find myself in front of a bra store, facing Gaspar Noé! I was blushing like a young first! He burst out laughing and said:

“Hey, you haven't changed! "

And that was very pleasant. His emotion was great, and I saw a lot of love in his eyes, a lot of joy… He gave me his mobile number (which is a proof of great confidence), and told me not to worry about the shooting, that Mr. Richet had experience in the United States; in short, he took over the role of the Pater, of my cinematographic Papa! The emotion was all the stronger, as I had just played the role of a bistro owner in Jean Becker's film Two days to kill, alongside Albert Dupontel. The latter had heard a lot about me from Gaspar, but we had never met. But when he saw that I was there, he left his role to come and greet me while blushing, like me by the way. We were very moved to know each other. Afterwards, we no longer dared to look at each other, except by interposed mirrors! Which proves that actors can be extremely shy.

So this was the opportunity for Gaspar to talk to me about his film in Japan, then we also talked about Lucille's work; Lucille whom I had after on the phone… it was very pleasant. We felt that life had maintained a good taste, and honed our mutual appreciation.

So, there too, there was appeasement?

I believe that when you are the project manager of a film, there can be a little distressing developments on the part of a director. I have a strong personality, at least I give that impression, but I am also a very fragile woman. People who don't trust themselves always overdo it, which in those days was.

Today, I am "very short"!

Sometimes people are so afraid of being overwhelmed by me (when they don't know what education I have, no one really knows), that suddenly, they shut my mouth! I have noticed that in other directors too… I bring out things for them that frighten them. And I think that's one of the reasons they weren't more curious than that. I wish they had a little more courage! Those who are afraid of being overwhelmed by me (I repeat myself!), Develop “choking-Christian” fantasies, many have hiccups of anorexics on their desires!

When people are afraid, there is nothing we can do; to die of "end" because without a job ...

After having devoted your life to it, difficult to be rehired in hospitals, my diploma is no longer valid and childhood unsuitable: “You left the real world for the glitter, well, stay there! ".

Silence, hospital!

Silence is turned…

A big thank you to Mrs. Françoise "Frankie" Pain as well as to Philippe Lowinski

Conversation with Boris Vassallo, the director of “Situation Critique”, with Frankie Pain and Philippe Nahon.

Interview by Philippe Lowinski.

What was your artistic journey?

I started wanting to make films when I left math and computer studies. The problem is that I knew nothing or very little about it; So I practiced, at home, with friends, to edit films shot in one evening. Seeing that I took all this with great conviction, I took my courage in both hands, left my native South, and went to the capital to study cinema. In three years, everything has gone very quickly. I did a dozen short films, including "Situation Critique", an end-of-study film, co-directed with Guillaume Lemezo. Since then I have co-written another fantastic short alongside Tibaud Vaneck, and I am starting to write a first feature film. And that is another kettle of fish.

Tell us about the Genesis of "Critical Situation"

Situation Critique is a school project. It is a film adapted from a short story by Pierre Siniac, which takes place in the future. The universe immediately wowed us. The principle of criminal criticism and the detached, almost "sporty" way they speak of murders committed by crime stars ... We wanted to make a film inspired by the Caro and Jeunet universe, this news was just that. that we needed.

How did you choose Frankie Pain and Philippe Nahon?

We first contacted Jean Claude Dreyfus for the lead role, something he accepted quite quickly. I had the chance to meet Frankie during a casting in the south of France a few months before. The reflection was of very short duration: I submitted the idea to Guillaume, we contacted Frankie, a meeting in his wonderful sewing workshop. We were very flattered when she accepted the role. It remained to find her husband. Three days before the start of filming, Agnès Giudicelli, costume designer for the film, talks to me about Philippe with whom she is working at the moment. We sent him the script by mail. Philippe went on the set on the first day to tell us that he was making the film. The casting was complete.

Regarding filming, how do you direct such strong personalities when you're so young?

They are great actors, and we were very impressed. But we worked like any other actor. If something didn't suit us (which was rare), we didn't hesitate to say so. It was a real pleasure to be able to direct actors of this caliber, we learned a lot from it.

You didn't discover Gaspar Noé's films until much later. How do you explain that Destiny made you reunite its two favorite actors again?

I can't explain Fate. On the other hand, I thank him from the bottom of my heart. Maybe we saw what Gaspar Noé saw when he met them on his side ...

And this hallucinating scene of peeling vegetables which refers to "Carne" without you having wanted it, how did it come about?

We had written a sequence in a kitchen, where Mr. Cauchon (Philippe Nahon) and his wife (Frankie Pain) discover the newspaper article describing the crime committed by Mr. Cauchon the day before. We had a lot of trouble finding the right decor. For this reason, we built it in the studio. When setting up the decor, we arrived with Guillaume, at the moment when the kitchen was in place without the decor sheets. So we thought of a long cooking scene with Frankie while Philippe reads the article. We also needed a landmark for Frankie, so we could recognize her later at a glance, hence the bandages on the fingers. Peeling was therefore a good solution for the description of the couple, as well as for the narration.

What was your reaction after watching "Carne" and "Seul contre tous"?

I was first moved to see Frankie and Philippe again in a kitchen ... Then I saw them a second time, then a third. These are two spellbinding films.

Do you think that “Critical Situation” was written in spite of you, and that Someone other than you was guiding your pen?

It's possible, I never asked myself the question. In any case I think that when I write a story, the words are linked one after the other. It's up to us to channel them into a concise story.

Viscerally and artistically, how do you react to the world of Gaspar Noé?

After the first viewing of "Irreversible", my hands continued to shake for a good ten minutes. I went to bed straight away. It was not the harshness of the images that touched me, but the questions raised by the film. I still think about it. When I saw "Carne" and "I Stand Alone", I was already more aware. In my opinion, and viscerally speaking, Gaspar Noé is the autopsy of our daily gastroenteritis. Finally I understand myself ...

Have you worked again with Frankie Pain or Philippe Nahon, and if so, on what occasion?

I was not so lucky and I regret it. At least I have not yet had the project that would have allowed me.

What is your news, and what are your projects?

I am currently writing a fantastic short film with Thibaud Vaneck, a friend, and I am starting to write a more personal feature on the world of prostitution in Marseille.

If, through our site Le Temps Détruit Tout, you wanted to make a declaration to Gaspar Noé, what would it be?

When do you come to eat at the house?

A big thank you @ Boris Vassallo & Philippe Lowinski
